Ind. loc.: "Hari-rud valley: 1093 (in part ["Cistanche laxiflora ... was mixed with C. Ridgewayana and distributed with it under the same number"]), April 23, 1885; May 12, 1885. On the banks of the Hari-rud river, parasitical on Tamarisk [Tamarix sp.]" (Aitchison, 1888: 93-94); "Afghanistan: Im Tale Harirud [valle fluvii Hari rud] gegen Herat, nördlich von Khusan? (Aitchison [Aitch. 1093 p.p. K])" (Beck, 1930: 41, sub C. Ridgewayana).

Typus / Type: Aitchison, 1888: t. 39; "Described from Afghanistan. Type in London [(?K)]" (Novopokrovskii & Tzvelev, 1958[2000]: 26[32], sub C. Ridgewayana); "Aitch. [Aitchison] 1093 p.p., K" (Schiman-Czeika, 1964: 22, sub C. Ridgewayana).

Designated by: Schiman-Czeika, 1964: 22.

Host: Parasitic on Tamaricaceae family [Tamarix sp.] (Aitchison, 1888: 94); Novopokrovskii & Tzvelev, 1958[2000]: 26[32]). The host plants need to be confirmed by further studies.

Comments:

Morphological obs.: "Flowers yellowish white, tipped with reddish chocolate, or maroon, each flower being subtended by a large bract, which is fringed with a line of short white hairs. An extremely handsome parasite, differing from C. Salsae in being wholly glabrous except the margins of the bracts" (Aitchison, 1888: 93-94). "Based on taxonomical results, C. ridgewayana was placed in sect. Cistanchiella while other species were placed in sect. Cistanche (Rechinger 1964). In the present study, there are no significant differences in pollen morphology between C. ridgewayana and C. salsa & C. ambigua, their exine ornamentation being microgemmate; thus these results suggest the existence of an overlapping between the two sections." (Shahi Shavvon & Saeidi Mehrvarz, 2010: 620).
