Comments:

Historical observations: "Grenier sandte mir auch eine Orobanche zum Benennen, welche ich als neu erkannte und beschrieb, wie folgt: … Nomen dedi in honorem amicissimi G. Grenier, Med. doct. et Bot. prof., cujus benevolentiae plantam siccam debeo." (Schultz, 1845: 739). "Orobanche grenieri has for a long time been interpreted as a synonym of O. cernua Loefl. [L.], until Carlón & al. (2005: 29) showed its discreteness" (Rätzel & al. 2015: 456).

Taxonomic observation: "From the newly included species of Orobanche [Carlón & al. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 3], only O. grenieri groups in the clade, in which it would have been expected to fall based on traditional taxonomic and as such morphology based treatments. Orobanche grenieri groups with other accessions of O. cernua s.l., but while different races of O. cernua from a wide geographical area (from Spain to Australia) have nearly identical ITS sequences, that of O. grenieri is unexpectedly pronouncedly different. Together with the clear morphological distinctness the recognition of O. grenieri on the specific level is strongly supported. This is in stark contrast to the nearly complete lack of differentiation on the sequence level among taxa traditionally recognized as separate, most importantly O. cumana. Further in-depth studies of this complex are obviously needed." (Carlón & al. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 3: 29-31 f. 1, 32 t. 9, 35 t. 12, 57, 59, 61 f. 4 ["Phylogenetic relationships"], 62, 64. 2005).

Chromosomatic number: 2n = 38 [?] ([O. cernua s.l.] Palomeque & Sañudo 1981; Schneeweiss & al. 2004).
