Lectotypus / Lectotype: "Lectotypus (hoc loco designatus, Fig. 12): "Orobanche amethystea Thuill.? Auf mehreren Pflanzen des Gratzer Schlossberges [Grazer Schloßberg], auch auf Anthericum ramosum !! – Blüht im Juli – August wenn an derselben Orten die O. rubens et O. Galii ganz vertrocknet sind. 1840. Dr. Maly" (L 0835152)." (Zázvorka 2010: 82, "National Herbarium of the Netherlands, University of Leiden (L)").

Designated by: J. Zázvorka in Acta Musei Moraviae, Sci. Biol. (Brno) 95(2): 77-119 (Zázvorka 2010: 82).

Host: mainly on Centaurea s.l. (incl. Cyanus, Psephellus, Rhaponticoides) and Echinops species, Compositae [Asteraceae] (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Dec 2016). "O. kochii is primarily (approx. 90 per cent) a parasite on Centaurea scabiosa and infrequently parasitic on C. jacea and C. triumfettii subsp. axillaris (Bohemia, Moravia), C. stoebe (Slovakia), C. sadleriana (Slovakia, Hungary), C. montana (Austria) and C. ruthenica (Russia, Saratov province). O. kochii occasionally parasitizes Echinops ritro (incl. subsp. ruthenicus) as well." (Zázvorka 2010: 83, Central Europe). In the Crimean peninsula also seems to be parasitic on Ptilostemon echinocephalus (Willd.) Greuter [Cnicus echinocephalus Willd.] (Fateryga in Plantarium 2016), this is apparently a new host. Seen now on Jurinea polycephala Formánek in North Macedonia (Nikolov 2019: 17, sub O. centaurina).

Comments:

Taxonomic observations: "Previously, all material of broomrapes in central Europe that parasitize Centaurea scabiosa, had generally been considered as Orobanche elatior Sutton (e.g., Chater & Webb 1972: 292; Kreutz 1995: 92-95; Novopokrovskij & Tzvelev [Cvelev] 1958: 107-108; Pusch 2009: 72-75; Teryokhin & al. 1993: 27; Tzvelev [Cvelev] 1981: 334; Uhlich & al. 1995: 134-137; Zhiyun & Tzvelev 1998: 238 [Zhang & Tzvelev [Cvelev] 1998]). Further study revealed that the plants parasitic on Centaurea scabiosa belong to two distinct and nonrelated species, correctly classified as Orobanche kochii F.W. Schultz [O. centaurina Bertol.] and O. elatior Sutton" (Zázvorka 2010). Orobanche centaurina Bertol. [O. kochii F.W. Schultz; O. ritro Gren. (O. ritri Gren. in Gren. & Godr., Fl. France 2: 634 (1853) (Tela Botanica, accessed Oct 2006)], Orobanche leptantha Pomel [O. curvata Pomel; O. icterica Pau], Orobanche loscosii L. Carlón & al. [O. ritro auct. hisp.] and Orobanche elatior Sutton [O. major auct.] are considered conspecific by many authors (e.g., Chater & Webb 1972: 292; Greuter & al. 1989: 260; Foley 2001: 71; Domina & Raab-Straube 2010). But in our taxonomic treatment we have preferred to consider these taxa as different species, which have different morphological characters and, frequently, different host plants.
