Designated by: H.G. Reichenbach fil., Icones florae germanicae et helveticae ... 20: 99 (1862) [?].

Host: usually on Picris hieracioides L. (Thorogood & Hiscock 2010), rarely on Pilosella officinarum Vaill. [Vaucher 1827: 64, "Apennins (Italy)"; Rumsey & Jury 1991: 268, "St Margarets, Kent" (Southeast England)], Compositae [Asteraceae] (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Aug 2019). "Soil test pits performed at over 20 sites of O. picridis in Poland have shown that it parasitizes only Picris hieracioides." (Piwowarczyk 2012: 103, sub O. picridis).

Comments: There seems to be much confusion about this species and its allies. It is close to Orobanche minor Sm. (Rumsey & Jury, 1991: 268) and relativly close to Orobanche artemisiae-campestris Gaudin, this last name has frequently been considered conspecific (e.g., Chater & Webb 1972: 291; Foley 2001: 58; Pujadas 2002: 397; Domina & Raab-Straube 2010).

Besides, from our point of view, this species is quite unlike Orobanche santolinae Loscos & J. Pardo, contrary to what some authors seem to think (e.g., Greuter & al. 1989: 257; Foley 2001: 58; Domina & Raab-Straube 2010).

Chromosomatic number: 2n = 38 (Hambler 1954, 1955, 1957; Rumsey & Jury 1991: 268, "2n = c. 38* & 38"; Kreutz 1995: 128; Zázvorka 2000: 495 "(extra fines)"; Schneeweiss & al. 2004).

Distribution: Algeria [unconfirmed], Austria, Belgique, Britain, Bulgaria [unconfirmed], Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Krim, Luxembourg, Malta [unconfirmed], Netherlands, Poland, Potugal [unconfirmed], Romania, Russia [unconfirmed], Serbia [needs to be revised], Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia [unconfirmed] and Ukraine.
