Ind. loc.: "In arenosis planitiei prope Koniah in Cariâ interiore [Konya / Konia / Iconium / Ikónion, Konya Province, Lycaonia, Central Anatolia Region, Turkey] (de Heldreich 1845)".

Lectotypus / Lectotype: G 00150063: 1. "891 / Orobanche / fleurs bleues claires –stigmate blanc / in arenosis / Koniah. 16 Juin 1845". 2. "Phelipaea Heldreichii Reut. in DC. prod.". Designated by: Carlón, L., Gómez Casares, G., Laínz, M., Moreno Moral, G., Sánchez Pedraja, Ó. & Schneeweiss, G.M. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 6: 45 (2008 [17 Jul 2008]).

Host: Eryngium sp. (Umbelliferae), e.g., Eryngium campestre L. (Beck 1930: 93, sub O. heldreichii, "auf Eryngium ... (Fedtschenko!) ... Russisch-Armenien"; Bornmüller 1910: 158, sub O. coelestis f. persica, "westlich vom Urumia-See [Lake Urmia, Iran] gesammelt, auf Eryngium schmarotzend [leg. Knapp]"; Beck 1930: 94, sub O. coelestis, "Eryngium spec. (s. Knapp)") (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Aug 2009).

Comments:

Morphological and taxonomic observations: This species is morphologically close to P. schultzii (Beck 1890: 117, "Gruppe der Trichocalyces (O. Schultzii, stricta, trichocalyx)"; Beck 1930: 93), however we have not any doubts about the independence of P. heldreichii.

Morphological observation: "Ph. pyramidali affinis sed..." (Reuter 1847: 8; Boissier 1879: 498). However, from our point of view, it is morphologically very different to Phelypaea pyramidalis Reut. in DC., Prodr. 11: 7 (1847).

Taxonomic observation: according to Zhang & Tzvelev in Flora of China 18 (1998) it is conspecific with "Orobanche coelestis (Reuter) Beck ... (1890)". In our opinion, that is just not true and it is morphologically very different to P. coelestis Reut.
