Comments:

Taxonomic observations.

"Note. The differences between this [P. nana] and the following species [P. ramosa] are not always clearly expressed. Evidently O. nana Noë is ancestral to the relatively younger species O. ramosa L., which has adapted to parasitizing cultivated plants" (Novopokrovskii & Tzvelev (1958: 69[64], sub O. nana).

According to Tzvelev (1981: 445), this species is conspecific with Phelipanche oxyloba (Reut.) Soják (1972) and Orobanche dalmatica auct., non Tzvelev (1958). When Phelipanche oxyloba (Reut.) Soják (1972) is considered to be conspecific with Phelipanche nana (F.W. de Noë ex Rchb. fil.) Soják, then it is the oldest and correct name for this taxon at the specific rank. However, according to our investigations, they are different species.

Moreover, in our opinion, from a morphological point of view Phelipanche nana is very different from P. mutelii (e.g., Reichenbach 1862: 88, 151, t. 1772; Beck 1890: 91; Jahandiez & Maire 1934: 695; Pujadas 2002: 361; Carlón & al. 2005: 11; Jeanmonod & Habashi 2008: 89). This opinion is also supported by recent genetic studies which seem to confirm its distance from the P. mutelii (Carlón & al. 2008: 13 f. 1). In our work, we studied both host and habitat, and this investigation also revealed clear interspecific differences in the host and habitat preferences (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Jan 2016; Carlón & al. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 1: 5 t. 1, 9 (2002, sub Orobanche nana); Bol. Cien. Nat. R.I.D.E.A. 48: 28 (2003, sub O. ramosa subsp. nana); Documentos Jard. Bot.
