Neotypus / Neotype: E 00053403 "Fig. 1. – Orobanche nowackiana Markgr. The neotype is the upper left-hand specimen [Qosja s.n.]." (Foley 2000: 273); "Neotype (designated here): Albania, Liqeni i Zi, 25.vi.1961, Qosja (E!), upper left-hand specimen on sheet (Fig. 1 & 2)" ( Foley 2000: 275); Syntypes: "Zavalin, 2.vi.1924, Markgraf 459; Martanesch, 9.vi.1924, Markgraf 582 (both thought to be formerly in B but apparently subsequently destroyed)." ( Foley 2000: 275). "Neotypification illegitimate" (Schlauer & al., 2003, accessed Feb 2009).

Designated by: M.J.Y. Foley in Candollea 55: 275 (2000).

Host: "Bornmuellera baldaccii, B. tymphaea, Alyssum heldreichii, A. murale and A. smolikanum" (Hartvig, 1991: 267); "Parasitic upon serpentine species of the Brassicaceae [Cruciferae], especially the genera Alyssum and Bornmuellera; possibly on other taxa also." (Foley 2000: 275). Alyssum lesbiacum (Foley 2000: 274), A. cf. heldreichii (Carlón & al., 2005. 67), A. murale and A. markgrafi (Mullaj & al., 2010: 164), Bornmuellera tymphaea Hausskn. (Holger Uhlich 1963 - flickr, accessed Apr 2009). "Plantae nutrientes. Secundum Markgraf: Thymus Jankae Čelak et Poa badensis Haenke [it is presumably that the host-plants were not correctly identified by Markgraf (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Jun 2015)]" (Beck, 1930: 100).

Comments:

Taxonomic observation: Foley (2000) "(Suggesting that these species, separately described from the Balkans, should be merged as O. nowackiana.)" (Haustorium 39: 12. 2001).

Morphological and taxonomic observations: "According to Foley (2000) Orobanche nowackiana and O. rechingeri are conspecific due to their similar morphology. However, the comparison of the two taxa emphasizes that the stigma lobes of O. nowackiana are purple and those of O. rechingeri are yellow. Another important difference may be that the host plant of the type of O. rechingeri was an Alyssum species (Foley 2000) and some other serpentine species of Brassicaceae (Hartvig 1991a), while Markgraf in the description of O. nowackiana named Thymus jankae and Poa badensis (though the latter species is not probable) as hosts ... Our plant has yellow stigmas and parasites on Alyssum sp., so if Orobanche nowackiana and O. rechingeri differed on a certain taxonomic level, it belongs to the latter taxon." (Barina & Pifkó, 2008: 460, sub O. rechingeri). In our opinion, it is relatively morphologically similar to Phelipanche bungeana, P. caucasica, P. cilicica, P. coelestis, P. pulchella [incl. O. longiflora sensu Rchb., Iconogr. Bot. Pl. Crit. 7: 47, t. 695 f. 932 (1829), non Pers. (1806); Phelypaea longiflora sensu C.A. Mey., Verz. Pfl. Casp. Meer.: 104 (1831), non Pers. (1806)] and P. tzvelevii.

Phylogenetic observation: Carlón & al. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 3: 60 f. 3 ["Phylogenetic relationships"], 67 (2005).

Chromosomatic number: n: 12 (Schneeweiss & al., 2004: 441, 443 f. 2 "(P) nowackiana, n = 12 (MitI)", sub O. nowackiana).

Distribution: Albania, Greece, Serbia and Turkey. "Med-smed (Dinaric-Scardo-Pindhian)" (Papović & al., 2014b: 107, sub O. nowackiana). "The known geographical range of the latter is thus extended eastwards from Albania through Greece and into Turkey and possibly also into western Asia" (Foley 2000: 274, sub O. nowackiana).
