Comments:

Chorological observations: P. purpurea subsp. ballii is a Algerian-Moroccan endemic species: "Ar. Geog. ... Praeter sp. nostrum ex Africa non vidi" (Ball, 1878: 603); "spécial au Maroc" (Jahandiez & Maire, 1934: 693).

Morphological observations: "Phelipaea caerulea C.A.M. var. Ball. spicil., p. 603. A typo recedit praecipue corollae labii superioris lobis rotundatis emarginatis, labii inferioris lobis rotundatis vix nevix [vix aut ne vix] acuminatis" (Maire, 1930: n.ş 617 [12 (12)]). "Ph. purpurea subs. ballii (Maire), comb. et stat. nov. (taller plants with rounded not apiculated lower lip lobes) is the geographic race occurring in the Atlas Mountains (Morocco) as a parasite of Cladanthus scariosus (Compositae)." (Carlón & al. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 6: 7, 104. 2008). The taxon is more variable than the type could make us think, "La existencia de lo que parecen transiciones morfológicas es precisamente una de las razones que nos han decidido a optar en estos cuatro casos por el rango subespecífico." (Carlón & al., 2008: 105).

Taxonomic observations: "Note: The large rounded lobes of the lower lip of the corolla distinguish this taxon from O. purpurea Jacq., justifying its reevaluation as an independent, distinct species. Extensive field surveys can clarify the taxonomic relation of this taxon with Phelipanche purpurea subsp. millefolii (Rchb.) Carlón et al. recently revaluated (Carlón et al., 2008)" (Domina & al., 2013).
