Designated by: M.J.Y. Foley, 1995-02 [in sched.]. Domina & Soldano in 104° Congr. Soc. Bot. Italiana (2009).

Host: usually on Lotus creticus L. [= Lotus commutatus Guss.; = Lotus salzmannii Boiss. & Reut.] (Leguminosae), more rarely on other Leguminosae species (e.g., Ononis variegata L.) (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Aug 2009).

Comments: cariological and genetic studies suggest that Orobanche densiflora were not connected with Orobanche minor group. (Román & al. 2003; Schneeweiss & al. 2004; Carlón & al. 2005: 62), contrary to what some authors seem to think (e.g., Beck 1930; Uhlich & al. 1995: 11). Moreover, O. densiflora is sometimes confused with O. foetida, it can be differentiated by an slightly aromatic odor, which is smoother and more pleasant than in the case of O. foetida (Carlón & al. 2005: 40).

N.B. O. densiflora, O. foetida, O. sanguinea [incl. O. crinita] and O. variegata are four relatively close species which are probably all present on the northern coast of Morocco and Algeria (cf., e.g., Ball 1878: 604; Pau 1924: 371; K 000425199-202 [mixed gathering of different specimens from Algeria and Morocco]). This could be a possible source of misidentifications, specially with the less typical specimens.
